The Twilight Sad
I remember bike riding in the cold to Great Scott to see the Twilight Sad, who I had no clue about, but was taking my former boyfriend’s word for it that they are amazing, and a little more amazing live. Upon arriving, we were shit out of luck because the show was sold out, and we tried a myriad of ways to bribe the doormen to let us in, and to no avail. We listened outside for a bit, disappointed but somehow getting energetic vibes from the roomy, tribal drums, droning guitars, and echoing vocals streaming from inside the venue.
I’ve just downloaded their album “forget the night ahead”, and although that sad epidemic was over two months ago, I feel like I’ve heard this before, but not in the way where it’s too familiar. Rather, these songs sound like something I’ve been yearning to hear for a while, like old friends with their singable melodies and comforting grooves.
I don’t like to compare bands to other bands, so I guess if I were to describe the Twilight Sad well enough for you to listen, imagine that it’s the end of the day… a long and busy one, but pretty good. You’ve been dealing with some hardships lately, but today you start to feel like soon everything just might be ok, and that you’re progressing through them, learning, growing and all that. If you put this record on, I think you will get this feeling.. Like you are seeing more sunlight through the newly opened windows than the recently closed doors.
